“Beep—” With the long whistle, on the morning of February 1, the “HC Progress” vessel loaded with 89,500 tons of imported coal from Indonesia smoothly arrived at Berth 3 of the Haichang Terminal at Machong Port in Dongguan, marking the first imported coal ship arrival at Machong Port in Dongguan for the Spring Festival transport in 2024.
Energy security is a project concerning people's livelihoods and their hearts. As one of the important transit bases for electricity coal transportation in South China, Machong Port serves not only as an energy hub port for Guangzhou, Foshan, Huizhou, Yunfu, and other places but also shoulders the important mission of ensuring winter heating and the production and living needs of the people in South China. The nearly 90,000 tons of coal carried this time are expected to generate 729 million kWh of electricity, which can meet the electricity needs of 3 million households for one month. This will address the urgent need for coal during the new wave of cold weather in South China during the Spring Festival period.
From January 26 to February 1, Machong Port’s coal terminal has been operating continuously. In just 7 days, there have been more than 150 arrivals and departures of coal ships, with a total transshipment of over 1.05 million tons of coal, representing a 24.4% increase compared to the previous period. “In recent times, there has been a sharp increase in the volume of coal ship transportation, with nearly 25 coal ships entering and leaving the port every day. In order to ensure the safe and efficient entry and exit of energy and material transportation ships, we have established the ‘Bridgehead · Party Building Alliance Vanguard’ with 7 port and navigation enterprises, set up party member responsibility zones, and ensured that during the Spring Festival transport period, ships transporting essential supplies for the people can ‘enter and exit directly, berth directly, and leave directly.’” said Chen Mingjie, a first-level administrative law enforcement officer at the Machong Maritime Affairs Office in Dongguan.
To ensure smooth production for energy companies and a warm Spring Festival for the public, the Dongguan Maritime Affairs Bureau closely monitors the entire process. They have opened up green channels for key essential supplies transportation ships, ensuring “direct entry and exit, direct berthing, and direct departure”. They are strengthening information exchange with port terminals and ship agents, operating a unified scheduling platform for shipping, and injecting strong maritime energy into the stable operation of the economy and society, ensuring a warm winter for the people. Huang Junbo, Secretary of the Party Branch and Director of the Machong Maritime Affairs Office in Dongguan, stated: “Deepening the integration of party building and business is an ongoing process. We will rely on the Party Building Alliance to jointly assess and identify hidden risks in waterway transportation, ensuring the safe navigation of coal transportation on water.”
